Aya Universe, Dubai: What to Expect

I’m losing my blogging mojo. I’ve posted once a week now for 4 years, which I think is pretty good going. Whilst over the last year, I’ve struggled to engage with Instagram and seen no growth for ages, my blog has continued to grow and I’ve never struggled to write a blog post. I guess everyone probably has these moments and sometimes it’s good to have a break. I actually found myself planning a trip thinking about how I’d maximise blog posts and had to tell myself off for trying to fit too much in… that was the proverbial straw and the jolt I needed to refocus myself. Work is absolute madness, I want to spend time in my garden, and pursue a couple of other projects, so as I head on another trip next week, I intend to rest and go with the flow, rather than worrying about what I’ll write afterwards!

So, honestly, the next few weeks are just going to be my scheduled posts. I probably won’t reply to comments straight away, but as always I appreciate your time, readership and thoughts.

This week’s scheduled post takes us to Aya Universe – one of Dubai’s hottest new experiences. Opened in December 2022, it promises to be ‘a trip to a beautiful universe’. Whilst I think that’s probably overmarketing it (!), it was a fun experience that was a lot of fun. Here’s what to expect!

Aya Universe is effectively a series of rooms, each with a different theme, that are filled with light, shape, noise and video art installations. It bills itself as interactive, which it is to a degree, but I’d say it’s more immersive than interactive.

It’s made up of 12 different unique ‘worlds’ (basically different rooms and themes) to explore. You can explore them in around 1hr. Overall I really enjoyed the trip as something a bit different but it was a sensory overload and I was glad for some peace and quiet afterwards!

The entrance to Aya

  • Aya Universe is located within the Mall at Wafi City. Wafi City is quite cool to visit anyway as it’s all Egyptian themed, with a pyramid shaped shopping mall, Obelisk, various Egyptian themed hotels (e.g. Raffles as a giant pyramid), an Egyptian spa, lots of food choices and of course a Souk. You can even wile away the hours on the ‘lazy river’, hiring a sun bed sitting by the pool. You can easily spend a full day there, with Aya just as a part of the day.
  • Aya costs 125 AED (£27) per person (under 3 and People of Determination* are free)
  • It takes around 1hr to visit all of the worlds in Aya Universe, probably a bit longer if it’s super busy and/or you have children with you

* People of Determination is the term used across Dubai to refer to what is traditionally labelled ‘disabled’ in the west. You’ll see this on toilets, discounted ticket prices and special mobility entrances/exits. I liked it.

Each world offers something a bit different. You start off in the Source which is full of flowers and the large sphere of life. You move through to Harmonia, which is a large room full of mirrors and glitter balls with the lights constantly changing colour.

Then comes Flora, one of my favourite rooms, with a huge tree of lights and shimmering grass. Tides then comes and assaults your sense of reality with huge light tubes to get lost amongst with mirrors reflecting everywhere.

After that it’s on to The Pool, Waterfall and River. The waterfall uses actual water to create a circle of water you can step in to the middle of – the water then lights up to make it a bit trippy!

Crazy madness

On to Celestia, which is galaxy themed as the planets whirl around you, followed by Outland which is some sort of ocean themed art.

To finish the visit off came two of my favourite rooms – Luna, filled with huge mirror balls and then Drift where you lie down on the soft grass and watch the art work on the ceiling move and contort in to shapes and colours.

Luna

So there you have it – the weird and totally crazy world of Aya. I’d recommend it to anyone looking to do something a little bit different to do in Dubai, though also be prepared for a sensory overload. Thanks for reading – stay safe and happy travelling!

  1. I’ve been struggling to find the words to blog recently as well, so I’m glad to know I’m not the only one (but also sorry to hear you’re feeling similarly). I think sometimes maybe we all just need a break and to enjoy some travel or relaxation or whatever else. I hope you enjoy your upcoming trip!

(Also, oh my goodness, this place looks like A LOT. I think I’d be very overstimulated by the end.)

    1. Sometimes we just don’t have the energy or brain space to give it – I think that’s OK and it’s best to listen to ourselves when we’re not feeling it, and not force it! …And yes, I was massively over stimulating for sure!!

  2. Blogging requires a lot more effort than IG, but thankfully, it doesn’t seem to be chained to the whims of the algorithm (yet)! It’s understandable to step back and enjoy life, so definitely do so on your trip! Aya Universe looks similar to TeamLabs in Tokyo with all of the lights and IG-worthy exhibits. Looks like a lot of fun!

    1. Yes it really does, and I dread the day if an algorithm comes in and suddenly collapses us all!! You’re right, it’s very similar to TeamLabs for sure.

  3. This place is really cool, different, otherworldly, definitely visually stimulating. I understand your feeling about blogging lately- sometimes it just feels like too much. Good for you for taking some time to travel, garden, regroup, and enjoy 🙂

  4. Aya Universe looks like such a funky place! Really cool installations and projections.
I’ve been struggling lately to blog too. Enjoy the offline time!

    1. Definitely a funky place.
I’m sorry to hear you’ve been struggling as well too – hope you can take some space as well if you need it 🙂

  5. That looks interesting – like a cross between Immersive Van Gogh and a Dale Chihuly exhibit. A few years ago I had what I termed a case of Blog Clog, similar to what you’re going through. I wrote a blog post about it and then went on a trip, and that seemed to cure it. But maybe an extended period away is just the thing. Enjoy your retreat from everyday life and take care of yourself.

Addendum: I’ve just reread that post for the first time in years. I’m going to be obnoxious and put it here IN CASE you want to experience that “I’m not alone” and “misery loves company” feeling. Don’t feel like you have to read it, but if you do, I hope it helps. I think you’ll see your current state in it.

    1. LOL you’re so right, that sums it up perfectly. I feel like going on a trip has definitely helped, so thank you for your advice 🙂 And thank you for sharing, it’s so nice to hear I’m not along with it, seems like we’ve all been through it at some point!

  6. I can see the sensory overload for sure! We have some galleries like that in NYC although probably not as spectacular. I agree that it’s good to take a break. I feel the same way with Instagram and when I travel I take a break from the blog world. Enjoy your beautiful garden!

  7. I don’t know how you manage to blog so faithfully while also having a demanding job Hannah! But I think your approach is right – go with the flow (or as Berto always says, “Be like the water – don’t fight the currents and just be”). Aya seems to represent all the colours of the rainbow (and more)! Looking at your descriptions of the rooms, I think I’ll like Drift where I can lie on the soft grass – or maybe I should just go outside and do that in real nature. But hey, give Dubai credit … it’s definitely something different from the usual tourist attractions. Take care of yourself xx

    1. I think because I enjoy it, and it’s a way of relaxing and calming outside of a job that demands I work wayyyy more hours than I should. So when the blog feels like another ‘job’ then it’s not worth the brain strain – I am just going to go with the flow a la Berto and do it when I feel like it, rather than having my set evenings as I used to 🙂 Thanks Corna – and you too xx

  9. The Aya Universe seems like such an interesting experience. And why am I not surprised to hear that it’s located in a mall!? The Flora room looks really pretty.

  10. This looks like a fascinating experience. We have seen variations of this sort of attraction in various countries around the world these past 5 years but have yet to take the plunge. Maybe we’ll save it for my return to Dubai. The cosmic passport is a nice touch.

    1. Yes they are popping up everywhere now aren’t they, TeamLabs are doing a good job in other locations. Like you, I was a bit sceptical, but it was fun and I’m glad I did it 🙂

  11. This is something I’d love to come across on my travels – I know I’d enjoy it – and sure even the mall itself is probably worth a visit – just look at that ceiling…

As you can see from the comments above, you are definitely not alone in your struggles – hope you’re enjoying your ‘off time’ XXXXX

  12. What a unique place but I can see how it would overstumulate! Don’t worry if you need to take a blogging break. We’ve all been there, and we’ll be here when you return. 😊

  13. I’ve been there myself: so obsessed about my blog – I refer to it as my crazy blogger mode where I eat, sleep and think about your blog all the time – that I started to lose track of what was important in life. Whenever I took a break from blogging, I came back more creative and found it easier to come up with fresh ideas, plans and strategies that help me grow my blog/business As for Aya Universe Dubai – I don’t think I have ever seen a more incredible gateway to the cosmos. This unearthly attraction represents Dubai’s persistent dedication to pushing the envelope of what may be expected from a tourist or entertainment destination. Thanks for sharing, and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

  14. I’ve been posting almost every week for a couple of years now, and need to fill in from older trips. I do take a week off a month, or stop for a few weeks if I travel, and often schedule some in advance. So I hear you!! We all need a break now and then.
