10 of the Prettiest villages in Suffolk

I think it’s well established by now that I love a picture perfect English village. I’ve written about my favourite villages in other counties such as Cambridgeshire and Rutland, but Suffolk is one of my favourite areas in the whole country and there are stunning villages aplenty. It’s the kind of place you drive through and nearly always end up crashing because you’re too busy staring at all the houses! Another quirk of the area is Suffolk Pink – it’s actually a thing to paint your house pink in Suffolk, which I love.

So, here are 10 of my favourites.

Situated just outside of Ipswich, during Roman times Coddenham was once the largest settlement in all of Suffolk. It’s now quaint and beautiful and the perfect place for a countryside walk with lots of walking trails all around.

The epitome of why I often nearly crash as I’m driving in Suffolk

Known as the prettiest village in England in a number of polls, Lavenham is one of the most famous perfect places in the area (so get there early, it gets busy). It’s packed full of incredible Tudor houses and if you want a treat, you can stay in some of them as hotels or B&Bs. The village is also even home to the house used as Godric’s Hollow, the home of Harry Potter!

Famous for its castle, Orford is a beautiful village with an abundance of postcard houses. Interestingly, it’s also home to Orford Ness, a shingle spit which you can ride out on on a boat – and bizarrely also the spot where missiles were tested during the Cold War!

My favourite!

Nestled in the Stour Valley, Cavendish is known for its village green – home to yet more Suffolk Pink cottages. It’s beautiful on a sunny day with the church in the background.

Yet more Suffolk Pink

This village is special because it’s home to not 1, but 2, stunning stately homes – Melford Hall and Kentwell Hall. It also has a brewery, an incredible church and of course, the obligatory bucket load of cute cottages.

Melford Hall

Home to Ickworth Hall, this village is another one perfect for a long walk with a lovely area of surrounding woodland. The church is also pretty special and even better – you can combine it with a visit to Lavenham (above) as the two are close by.

Ickworth Hall
And more cottages!

This is one of my favourites as it’s on the way to what was my Granny and Grandpa’s house, so it brings back fond memories of visiting as a child. I love the little cottages by the church!

Kersey is a village where the main street has a ford across a stream. Its principal claim to fame is that a coarse woollen cloth called Kersey cloth takes its name from it…oh and it has Suffolk Pink houses aplenty too. Another beauty to add to the list!

Kersey’s pink houses

Another gorgeous village, sitting right in the south in Dedham Vale, is Stoke-by-Nayland. It’s got one of the most beautiful churches in the area, and some stunning ancient Tudor buildings.

Perfect Tudor buildings

Hadleigh is famous for its wonderful Guild Hall building and towers, which are totally stunning and really unique. It’s also been consistently voted one of the best places to live in Suffolk, and the whole of England.

Stunning church

So, what do you think of Suffolk’s villages? I am totally in love with all of them and can’t wait to explore even more as I get distracted driving around. And if you’re interested in visiting Suffolk, please check out my other posts on the area:

  1. I’m positive that I would be a danger on the road driving through these beautiful towns because I would be too busy oohing and aahing at all the lovely houses and views. Best someone else do the driving so I just look and admire out the window 🙂 I do love all the pink houses!

  2. Such wonderfully impressive English village houses & structures, Hannah 🙂 If I had to list my favorites, I’d start with the gold house in Orford (that roof is awesome!) & the castle, Kentwell Hall (I think) at Long Melford, Ickworth Hall (simply, Wow!), and the light yellow cottage (your post header image) at Horringer cum Ickworth. Thanks for sharing this lovely countryside!

  6. Just lovely! Sometimes I enjoy watching your version of Escape to the Country and am always fascinated by the old houses the people could buy. So different from our architecture in Aus. Thanks for the wander, Mel

    1. Thanks Mel, and really appreciate you reading and commenting. That’s so funny you watch the British Escape to the Country – not many beautiful beachfront houses and sunny suburbs in England that’s for sure….But we do have amazing, wonky old cottages haha! 🙂

  7. Such gorgeous houses and so much variety! I do love the look of Orford and like another person that commented I also enjoy watching Escape to the Country which sometimes shows these pretty villages. The flowers in the spring and summer certainly add to the charm as well!

    1. Aw thanks Linda – we are so lucky to have so many lovely villages in England and I agree Orford is my favourite too 🙂 I think it’s great you watch Escape to the Country, that’s so funny! What they don’t show is the houses in deepest darkest winter when it’s snowing and you can’t get anywhere haha! 🙂

  11. Wow, what a wonderful list of such beautiful villages. From Cavendish’s iconic pink thatched cottages to Lavenham’s crooked houses, the beauty of Suffolk’s villages is all in the unique architecture. I very much like their colourful Tudor design, medieval past and cosy village pubs. Thanks for sharing and have a lovely evening 🙂 Aiva xx

  12. These are all so lovely and that Ickworth Hall looks neat, too. I feel for the villagers living in these beautiful places – how disrupting it must be to have all these people gawping at their homes and clogging up their streets. That’s the price of beauty, I guess. 🙂

    1. Aw so glad you like them, and thank you for taking the time to visit. Actually, most of these villages aren’t that well known. Lavenham is very touristy but the others are quite quiet. Although I know if I lived in one of these cottages and people were taking photos I’d be annoyed!! So perhaps I shouldn’t take pictures, but then I can’t resist a beautiful looking house!! 🙂

      1. I’m guessing the people who live there have the same mindset I have living on a golf course and finding golf balls in my yard, which is: (sigh) oh well, I guess it’s a small price to pay for living in this great spot!

  13. This looks like a great list of picturesque English villages. It’s too bad we don’t have houses or cottages like that here in Canada.

  15. Picture perfect is right! I would be trying to pull over to take photos, if it’s even reasonable to drive through those streets – I’m imagining them narrow, twisting, and turning. Just lovely, and the colors…

    1. So glad you like them Ruth – and you’re very right about the streets. They are very narrow and often only fit one car, meaning lots of reversing and moving out of the way. That’s part of the charm of English country roads though 🙂 So glad you enjoyed the post. thank you for reading.

  18. Oh … it’s impossible to choose a favourite here! So many beautiful cottages, roads and just generally the amazing landscape. Here’s a fun fact about pink: Did you know that pastries taste better when they come out of pink boxes or served on pink plates (because pink makes us crave sugar 🎀).

    1. They are all just toooo beautiful aren’t they! Oh my goodness, I never knew that about pink….I’ll have to test the theory and order 2 of everything (one in a pink box, one in another box) just to test it!! 🙂
