A Review of the Royal Savoy, Lausanne

This is more like it, my husband cooed as the hotel came in to view. We don’t mind admitting we’re partial to a bit of luxury travel, but due to prices in Switzerland we’d not gone all out on hotels like we normally do. We stayed in some very nice and decent hotels, but The Savoy was our treat of the holiday. And what a little treat it was.

Approaching reception

Lausanne is one of the most picturesque cities in Switzerland, with a gorgeous old town and beautiful waterfront lying right on the shores of Lake Geneva. The Royal Savoy is close to the water’s edge, a short 5 minute walk down to the front.

To get to the main part of town is a quick 10 minute metro ride, and there’s a stop right by the hotel (which you will be able to use for free as they give you a travel card).

Old Town Lausanne

You can also walk to the train station in about 20 minutes for easy access everywhere in Switzerland, or again take the metro a short 5 minute journey.

We had a lovely room, the only one of the whole holiday with a bath – and it was a huge one at that – the dream! The bed was super comfy, there was a desk to sit at, and a nice sofa area to chill out in. There was daily cleaning and nightly turn down (I always love the little slippers ready for me to cosy down in the evening).

In our room

The best feature of the room though was the balcony, overlooking Ouchy park and perfect to relax and read in the sunshine on our visit as it was 26 degrees and beautifully sunny!

The food and drink was delicious. We had breakfast in the hotel each day, either in the restaurant or on the terrace and there’s a great selection from the buffet or off the menu at no extra cost. I tried the poached eggs, Shakshuka, pancakes and crepes off the main menu, and ate my way round most of the buffet. The fresh fruit was really good quality, and the croissants served warm – delicious!

The hotel also has a rooftop bar, called the Sky Lounge, which serves evening meals. It’s not open every day, but again the food was delicious. We shared fondue and wine as the sunset was setting so that was pretty magical.

The hotel’s main asset is its spa. We’d planned to have a spa day, but unfortunately our luggage was lost meaning we had no swimwear and neither of us wanted to rock up naked. Instead we settled for relaxing alongside the pool and reading our books, which was really lovely regardless and a good recharge for the mid-section of our holiday.

Lounging by the pool

The hotel also has beautiful gardens to enjoy with lots of nice little corners of tables surrounded by trees for privacy – we sat in the garden with cocktails one evening which was fun.

There is also a lounge bar, cigar bar and of course the rooftop bar I mentioned previously. In addition to that is a 24hr concierge who is able to help organise boat trips, recommend restaurants and help however you need.

So that’s it for The Royal Savoy. We loved our stay here, and whilst not on the level of an elite 5* hotel, it really was beautiful. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the middle of our 10 day trip around Switzerland, and would recommend it to anyone looking for a little piece of luxury in Lausanne. What did you think? Stay safe and happy travelling everyone!

  1. I think I would have a hard time leaving this hotel, even to go out and see the city, because it is just so beautiful! That picture of your fondue dinner should be used for their advertising because it is striking 🙂

    1. Oh totally, we actually had a full day excursion from here planned and then decided not to do it and instead rest by the pool and sit on the rooftop bar drinking cocktails 🙂

  2. First of all, Hannah, your feature shot should be the cover of a foodie magazine or on the Savoy’s brochure. Fantastic! Besides who wouldn’t enjoy that meal with that view and that sunset! The hotel is truly lovely and in a perfect location. I can see why you chose to stay there. Thank you for sharing your experience and your amazing photos!

  5. It would be hard to leave the hotel it’s so beautiful. As you can guess we only treat ourselves to a luxury hotel once or twice on our months long trips. This would be one to do it in I think! Maggie

    1. I’m in agreement, I could easily have spent a week or so there. Hope you’re having a great weekend and that it’s not tooo hot across the channel, we are scorching here!

  7. It looks lovely but how disappointing about not being able to take the waters! You seem to have a much better attitude about it – I would be fuming. Given all the warnings about lost luggage these past few years, I’ve taken to putting my swimsuit in my carry-on if pools, spas, soaking are a focal point of my trip. And just about the last thing I want to do on vacation is go swimsuit shopping. Yuck!

    1. You’re so sensible and I will be doing the same in future. I was really bummed about not being able to use the pool as it was so beautiful and the hot tub was also glorious, but alas – I live and learn! Have a great weekend 🙂

  9. After a day of exploring and sightseeing, you just want a cosy place to rest your head. That’s where a good hotel experience comes in. It’s more than just a place to sleep. It’s a haven of comfort and luxury amid your adventure. I find that a great hotel can be the cherry on top of your travel sundae, which takes your trip from good to great. The view from the balcony is quite amazing and so is the sunlit garden. Thanks for sharing and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

    1. Absolutely, I completely agree. We often find that a hotel and food make a trip – even if a location doesn’t have that much to do, if you have a beautiful hotel and good food it’s still easy to have a good time. in this case Lausanne had it all – and we had a wonderful stay here. Thanks for reading Aiva and hope you’re having a nice weekend xx

  14. We stayed quite often in the Royal Savoy because we enjoy staying there. I have a bath every evening before dinner as well. The breakfast is great, I love breakfasts, and the service is perfect. Unfortunately, we are only going to Lausanne about four times yearly for a couple of day.

  15. Oh my.. so beautiful. Funnily enough we were in Switzerland in June. We too saved up on some of the luxury but then splurged on our hotel in Zurich. We didn’t make it to Lausanne. Looks like you had a wonderful time.

  18. Oh, it becomes difficult when I have to choose between a bath or a balcony that has such a lovely view … and here you are lucky to have both! But my goodness, the fondue and wine at the Sky Lounge is the winner here for me! Lausanne looks like a beautiful place to explore – I certainly wouldn’t mind walking those lovely streets now … with the prospect of fondue and wine later 😉.
