Pacific island nations are small island developing states (SIDS) facing rising seas and cyclones. But their cities are growing fast, so are efforts to help the most climate-vulnerable people hitting the mark?
The informal settlements of Honiara are home to almost half the city’s population, and the largest urban settlement in Solomon Islands. The complex challenges of these vulnerable urban communities call for tailored, multi-faceted solutions. RMIT University has been providing multi-disciplinary expertise, working alongside various stakeholders to provide a holistic approach to solving these problems. This collaborative approach taken for dealing with informal settlements in Honiara may also be applied to other Pacific Islands and SIDS experiencing the impacts of climate change to support long term, lasting solutions.
