The GlobalABC Circularity Sub-Working Group creates synergies to accelerate sustainability in the built environment and the construction sector

During the 2023 GlobalABC Annual Assembly on 1-2 June in Helsinki, Finland, the One Planet Network and the Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction announced a close collaboration on their work in the buildings and construction sector. Building on the legacy of the former OPN Sustainable Buildings and Construction Programme (2015-2022), the cooperation materializes under the GlobalABC Circularity Sub-Working Group, led by the United Nations Environment Programme, Ministry of the Environment, Finland and Professor Usha Iyer-Raniga Co-Lead at RMIT University.

Through a whole life cycle approach, while incorporating circularity, material efficiency, and low-emission solutions, The GlobalABC Circularity Sub-Working Group helps mainstream a holistic approach to buildings, construction and infrastructures.

The GlobalABC Circularity Sub-Working Group:

  1. Focuses on circularity, resource efficiency and low-emissions solutions, for both climate mitigation and adaptation;
  2. Conducts strategic and environmental impact assessments to integrate environmental considerations into decision-making and advance integrated, system-level approaches to the planning and delivery of sustainable infrastructure;
  3. Addresses the essential role of national and local governments as urban planners, regulators and investors;
  4. Promotes investment in infrastructure that is environmentally, socially and economically sustainable, climate resilient and resource efficient;
  5. Promotes a strategic approach to the use of buildings, construction and infrastructure.
