International Women’s Day Profile – Amy Jones

An interview with Amy Jones. Amy is RMIT Alumni.

Where are you working now? 

“Cushman and Wakefield”

What is your role and what activities does your role entail on a daily basis?

“Associate Director – Office Leasing
Leasing advice, property inspections, and transactions.”

What do you like best about your role?

“My role is very social and client-facing. I have the opportunity to meet many new faces day to day. The role is always changing and never stagnant.”

What attracted you to your role? 

“I prefer to work in an active role, where I have the opportunity to meet new people and not be stuck behind a desk.”

What is most important to you when looking for a job?

“Team culture is important to me when looking for a job, majority of my time is spent with my colleagues and your day-to-day can be much more enjoyable when you have supportive teammates.”

Tell us about your career journey so far 

“I started working in a small business called Lemon Baxter in South Melbourne a few days a week to gain some property experience. I was able to see how all parts of the business operated from management, valuation, sales, and leasing. I was then poached by Cushman and Wakefield after a few years of experience working as a leasing executive within the City Fringe markets to come into the CBD and work for larger institutional clients. I have been in my role for 3 years now and highly enjoying it.”

Tell us about the challenges and triumphs you have faces as a female in a male-dominated industry

“My team is majority male, however, we are constantly trying to recruit females into the role. The role I currently have has great growth opportunities for females and would encourage anyone completing the degree to consider a job in an agency.”

If you could say one thing to young females looking to enter the industry – what would it be? 

“The property industry is a very active industry with many opportunities. The degree provides are a wealth of knowledge across the entire property industry and provides many different avenues from working for the council to working in a real estate agency or developer.”

Why should students in school consider your industry as a further study and career option? 

“Lots of job opportunities that have great growth in varying roles.”

What did you enjoy best about your degree? 

“The degree was very hands-on with great real-life examples and experience. The study tour in particular was very well organized and expanded my knowledge of different property markets across various cities.”
