Tell me about the Master of Energy Efficient and Sustainable Building

We speak with Dr James PC Wong, Program Manager of the Master of Energy Efficient and Sustainable Building, to find out more about this degree and uncover how designing and delivering energy efficient and sustainable buildings can impact both society and the business bottom line for the better.
Tell me about the Master of Energy Efficient and Sustainable Building.
Energy efficient and sustainable buildings will be the very cornerstones of future cities. By the year 2050 the world’s population will reach 9.6 billion and resources will become even more valuable. Sustainable and energy efficient buildings need to be the blueprint of future cities and our program emphasises the practical application and integration of sustainable building concepts, performances, technologies, constructions and management.
Our Master program, which is one of a kind in Australia, was developed to specifically address the needs of future cities and create a sustainable future.
What exactly will students learn in this degree?
In the future all buildings will need to be highly energy efficient and sustainable. The demand for professionals with expertise in this area will only increase. We have created a program that is rigorous in providing students the opportunity to gain extensive and advanced knowledge and technical skills required to design, assess and analyse energy efficient and sustainable buildings which is needed for future design and construction professionals.
Students are immersed in learning that span across multiple disciplines like building science and building construction and gives them in depth knowledge into building systems and technologies. Our program is designed for students who are particularly from architecture, engineering, building and construction backgrounds, allowing professionals from a range of fields to understand what it takes to successfully deliver sustainable building projects.
Why is it important we design energy efficient and sustainable buildings?
There is a huge need currently for professionals to work towards a more sustainable future.
It is important for professionals know how to analyse future trends and design buildings that have a positive impact on society, it’s detrimental to our future.
There are many benefits of energy efficient and sustainable buildings; they increase comfort and wellbeing, they lower greenhouse gas emissions, provide long-term cost savings and future proof buildings.
Why is working with this industry such a great part of the course?
This program has been designed in response to industry partners highlighting a current skills gap that exists in the sector. This means that there is an opportunity for students to make a difference and have a lasting impact.
To understand how they can contribute to this area, students will have the chance to learn from industry professionals and work on real-world case studies to further enhance and apply their skills and knowledge in energy efficient and sustainable buildings.
Where are graduates working, what career path have they taken?
Our graduates have gone onto various career paths across the public sector, the state and national government and the private sector. Graduates are working in areas like: Energy management, building sustainability assessment, facilities management, façade engineering and building energy engineering.
This is an incredibly exciting industry to be a part of – and it will only continue to grow.
