AUBEA 2017: Keynote Speaker Announced: Dist. Prof. Brian M. Kleiner

RMIT Property, Construction and Project Management are pleased to announce Distinguished Professor Brian M. Kleiner will be a keynote speaker at AUBEA in 2017.

Brian M. Kleiner, Ph.D., is Director of the Myers-Lawson School of Construction (since 2011), a joint venture between the College of Architecture and Urban Studies and the College of Engineering at Virginia Tech, USA.  He is also the Ralph H. Bogle Professor of Industrial and Systems Engineering in the College of Engineering at Virginia Tech.  As Director of the Myers-Lawson School of Construction, Kleiner oversees an innovative partnership offering a comprehensive and unified platform for innovation and excellence in construction education, research, and outreach.  He is also an Affiliate Faculty Member in the Via Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and an Affiliate Faculty Member in the Department of Building Construction.

In 2014, Kleiner was received the Distinguished Professor Award by the Construction Industry Institute.  In 2013, he was awarded a U.S. Department of Defense Patriot Award.  In 2012, he was recognized for his commitment to diversity and inclusion by being awarded the McPherson Memorial Award for Achievements in Diversity.   He has served on the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health Sector Council for Construction for over a decade.

Dr. Kleiner was recently elected to the board of the International Council for Research and Innovation in Building and Construction (CIB).  As the North American Director, he is responsible for Canada and the USA.   Kleiner has established, and maintained, while serving as an administrator, a world-class research program best known as health and safety in construction as well as healthcare systems. He has been active in CIB in general, and W099, in particular.  He organized a conference in Washington, D.C. in 2011, and was involved in the organization of W099 Melbourne, Australia in 2009.

Kleiner’s technical orientation is the analysis and design of work systems, known as ‘macro’ or ‘systems’ ergonomics.  His research also focuses on socio-technical systems, function allocation in automation, and systems design, safety, health and performance management.  To support research-to-practice, Kleiner regularly delivers workshops and speaks to practitioners.  His classroom teaching has been focused on courses related to leadership, project management, occupational safety and health, and work system analysis and design.

Kleiner has authored or co-authored more than 175 peer-reviewed papers and has participated in more than $10 million in funded research projects. He was the founding director of the Center for Innovation in Construction Safety, Health, and Well-being (IC-SAFE).

Kleiner received his Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree and Ph.D. from the State University of New York (SUNY) system.
