Staff Member in Profile: Dr. Frank Boukamp

Dr. Frank Boukamp is a senior lecturer within the School of Property, Construction and Project Management at RMIT University. Since obtaining a degree in Computer-Aided Civil Engineering from Bauhaus University in Germany, Frank focused his research on BIM and construction data & knowledge integration. He holds a PhD in Civil Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University (USA) and is currently the Program Manager for the Construction Management program at RMIT University.

Dr. Boukamp’s research focuses on IT solutions for construction management, such as the development of Building Information Model (BIM) based knowledge management tools and the application of Augmented and Virtual Reality to construction and construction education. His collaboration with an international team of researchers from Germany and the USA on “BIM in Occupational Health and Safety” led to multiple publications and received a “first price” award in the area of Construction Management at the German competition ‘Auf IT gebaut – Bauberufe mit Zukunft’ 2015 conducted by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy in collaboration with industry partners.

Dr. Boukamp is a founding Committee Member of MelBIM, a not for profit group based in Melbourne, Australia that seeks to bring together the built environment community of Victoria, to share and exchange thoughts and knowledge relating to technology and innovation across the AEC+FM industry, with a particular focus on BIM. At RMIT, Dr. Boukamp is a member of an e-Learning Innovation Incubator group, aiming to push the boundaries of innovative technology use to support learning. His current effort in this area focuses on the use of Spherical Cameras and Virtual Reality glasses (e.g. Google Cardboard) to create immersive, virtual site visits that can be shared with students and allow lecturers to expose students to site experiences and work integrated learning without exposing them to site hazards.
