International Women’s Day Profile – Reem Jaber

An interview with Reem Jaber. Reem is RMIT Alumni.

Where are you working now?

“Built “

What is your role and what activities does your role entail on a daily basis?

“Project Coordinator. Roles include managing services on the project, along with the construction of a pool and commercial kitchen packages”

What do you like best about your role?

  • “Exposure to new construction elements on different projects
  • Ability to experience difference types of builds through project rotations (e,g. hospitals, data centres, hotels, airports etc.) ”

What attracted you to your role?

  • “Problem solving on site to overcome issues encountered on site.
  • The variety of work – never feels like you’re doing the same thing everyday “

What is most important to you when looking for a job?

  • “work-life balance
  • career progression”

Tell us about your career journey so far

“Commenced working at Built while I was in my final year of study at RMIT, where I was working on a hospital project expanding their theatre facility. Once i graduated from RMIT i commenced my grad program at Built and completed two years of rotations within the company to fulfil the program. I am now two years out of the grad program and have thoroughly enjoyed my time at built and have completed 6 projects during my 4 years at built.”

Tell us about the challenges and triumphs you have faces as a female in a male-dominated industry

“Dealing with difficult people on site who won’t take you seriously or complete certain works because you’re a female. Approaching my built team with this issue and working through the problem has been helpful with the support received”

If you could say one thing to young females looking to enter the industry – what would it be?

“Be confident and speak up if anything or anyone makes you uncomfortable (especially on site)”

Why should students in school consider your industry as a further study and career option?

“Fast paced working environment with exposure to many different elements that another field wouldnt necessarily provide. Ability to change projects allows variety in the workplace and you never feel like you’re living a repetitive work cycle.”

What did you enjoy best about your degree?

“The study tours (Dubai/London and India)”
